Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village – Where the Forges Never Go Cold

Along National Highway 3 toward Ta Lung Border Gate, amid the limestone mountains of the northeast, lies a place where the clang of hammers rings out from early morning and forge fires glow red inside family workshops. This is Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village, home to knives renowned for their sharpness across the northern mountains. If you’re planning a trip to Cao Bang, a stop here will add a rich cultural dimension to your journey.

Where Is Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village?

Before checking the map, note that the administrative boundaries have changed. Phuc Sen was formerly part of Quang Hoa District; since 2025, it has been part of the newly established Quang Uyen Commune in Cao Bang Province.

The area lies within the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark and is known for its scenic mountains and rivers. National Highway 3 runs between Cao Bang City and Ta Lung Border Gate, making the village easy to reach. It’s about 40 km from the city center and takes roughly an hour to drive.

The blacksmiths are spread across several hamlets rather than gathered in one place. Six hamlets—Pac Rang, Phia Chang Tren, Phia Chang Duoi, Dau Co, Lung Vai, and Tinh Dong—are home to nearly 200 forges and around 550 skilled blacksmiths. Pac Rang is the most popular stop for visitors, with its many forges and easy viewing.

History: From Weapons Workshop to the North’s Blacksmithing Hub

According to local accounts, the village’s blacksmithing tradition dates back to the 11th century, when weapons were made for Nung Ton Phuc and Nung Tri Cao in their resistance against the Song army. After the wars ended, villagers turned to making farm tools and knives for everyday use. Another theory suggests that the Nung An brought their blacksmithing skills with them when they migrated to Cao Bang.

Whatever its origins, Phuc Sen is now considered the largest traditional blacksmithing center in northern Vietnam. The Nung An blacksmithing craft here has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. In 2021, the province recognized Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village alongside Phia Thap Incense Village and Quoc Dan Paper Village.

The Craft Behind Phuc Sen Knives

The secret lies in the steel-tempering technique, identified in the heritage records as a distinctive part of the local craft. Blacksmiths don’t use measuring instruments; they judge the color of the flames and steel by eye to know exactly when to quench the blade. This skill has been passed down through generations, inspiring the saying that Phuc Sen blacksmiths “forge knives by eye.”

The main products are knives, hammers, scissors, and hand tools such as kitchen knives, machetes, hoes, sickles, and axes. Their quality has stood the test of the market: a commune leader once shared that even at three times the price, Phuc Sen products outsold imported goods at the same market. The craft is also a key source of income, contributing more than VND 18 billion to the local economy each year.

What Can Visitors Experience in Phuc Sen?

Watch the traditional forging process. Each forge usually has two or three people working in rhythm: one holds the metal blank on the anvil while the others take turns wielding the hammer. An old car leaf spring is heated, hammered, shaped, ground, and tempered until it gradually becomes a knife. The moment the glowing steel is plunged into water with a hiss and a cloud of white steam is the highlight—and a great photo opportunity.

Talk with the blacksmiths. The Nung An are warm and welcoming. Ask politely, and they’ll be happy to share stories about their craft, how they choose steel, and how to identify a good knife.

Buy a knife straight from the forge. Buying directly means a better price and an authentic product, and you can also request a custom size.

Visit nearby craft villages. Phia Thap Incense Village and the traditional paper village are close by, making it easy to combine them into a half-day tour of Cao Bang’s traditional crafts.

Tips for Visiting Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village

Best time to visit: The forges are busiest in the morning, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. September through November brings dry, cool weather, coinciding with the golden rice harvest and beautiful water levels at Ban Gioc Waterfall. In the final months of the year, the forges bustle with preparations for Tet.

Getting there: A motorbike is the most flexible way to explore the hamlets. If you’re driving, you can stop along National Highway 3 and walk in.

Safety: Keep your distance from the forge and hammering area, where sparks and metal fragments can fly. Don’t pick up tools or touch hot metal blanks. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Etiquette: Ask permission before taking close-up photos of blacksmiths or entering their homes. These are family homes and working spaces, not ticketed tourist attractions.

Buying a knife:

  • A good knife has an even blade and a sturdy spine. When tapped, it produces a clear, ringing sound.
  • Kitchen knives typically cost from a few tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand dong, depending on the type. Ask the blacksmith for current prices.
  • If you’re flying, pack knives securely in your checked baggage, with the blades wrapped carefully.
  • Wipe the knife dry after use to prevent rust, as traditionally tempered steel does not receive industrial rust-proofing treatment.

Phuc Sen Blacksmithing Village has no grand monuments, but it preserves something more valuable: a traditional craft that continues to thrive in the age of machinery, thanks to the hands and skilled eyes of generations of Nung An people. Spend a morning here listening to the hammers, watching the forge fires, and taking home a Phuc Sen knife—a gift infused with the spirit of Cao Bang’s mountains and forests.
