Giới thiệu

Ngoc Thanh Mother Goddess Temple: a sacred site in the heart of Cao Bang’s mountain town

In a peaceful neighborhood of Tan Giang Ward stands a small temple with moss-covered curved roofs. This place is linked to a legend from the Mac Dynasty era and serves as a spiritual anchor for local residents. It is the Ngoc Thanh Mother Goddess Temple, often simply called Ngoc Thanh Temple.

Legend and history

According to local folklore, the temple was built during the Mac Dynasty’s reign in Cao Binh (the old name for Cao Bang) to worship the third daughter of King Mac Kinh Vu. After losing Thang Long in the late 16th century, the Mac Dynasty retreated to the border region of Cao Bang and maintained its rule there for nearly another century. The temple is therefore one of the few remaining traces of this period.

Through many historical upheavals, the original ancient temple no longer survives. Local residents pooled money and effort to restore and renovate the temple in 1993 and again in 2005. On December 17, 2004, the provincial People’s Committee issued a decision allocating the temple’s 1,008 m² plot of land to the Tan Giang Ward People’s Committee for management and use. The ward also established a Temple Management Board, with its own regulations and annual activity plans.

Architecture and worship spaces

The temple is laid out in the shape of the Chinese character “Dinh”, divided into two parts: the front hall and the inner sanctuary. To the right of the temple is the Lau Co (Maiden’s Pavilion), and to the left is the Lau Cau (Young Lord’s Pavilion) and the Guardian Deity shrine, alongside a hall dedicated to Buddha. On the outer scroll-shaped panel are four Chinese characters reading “Ngoc Thanh linh so”, meaning “sacred and spiritually powerful Ngoc Thanh”.

The altars are arranged as follows:

  • Front hall: on the right is the altar to Mother Cao Tien (Lady of the Forest), on the left is the altar to Saint Tran, and in the center is the Common Altar dedicated to the Five Mandarins.
  • Inner sanctuary: dedicated to the Three Palace Mother Goddesses — the Mother of Heaven, the Mother of the Forests, and the Mother of Water — following the Vietnamese Tam Phu and Tu Phu (Three/Four Palace) Mother Goddess worship tradition.
  • Buddha worship hall: features three tiers of altars. The top tier holds the set of Three Buddhas of the Past, Present and Future statues. The middle tier has a statue of Amitabha Buddha at the center, flanked by a statue of Guanyin Holding a Child. The bottom tier holds three statues of Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin), with an altar to Duc Ong (the Lord) set further inside.

The temple houses 6 lacquered horizontal boards and 4 pairs of parallel scrolls, all donated by local residents during the temple’s restoration.

Location and how to get there

The temple is located in Tan Giang Ward, Cao Bang Province, in what used to be the central area of Cao Bang City. Following the administrative restructuring from July 1, 2025, the new Tan Giang Ward now comprises the former Tan Giang, Duyet Trung, and Hoa Chung wards, as well as the former Chu Trinh and Le Chung communes.

  • From central Cao Bang: it only takes a few minutes by motorbike, taxi, or ride-hailing motorbike.
  • From Hanoi: take a coach or limousine van to Cao Bang via National Highway 3, a journey of about 6–7 hours. From there, take a local ride into town to reach the temple.

Best time to visit

The temple is busiest on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month and during festivals and holidays, especially the first lunar month of the year. During these times, the temple is filled with incense smoke, offerings, and Mother Goddess worship rituals. If you prefer a quieter visit to admire the architecture, it’s best to go on a regular weekday. That said, the temple is small and not always open, so it’s worth checking with the Temple Management Board or nearby residents before you visit.

As for weather, Cao Bang is most pleasant in autumn (September to November) and spring (February to April). These seasons are also convenient for combining your visit with other destinations in the province.

Cost

The temple is free to visit. Visitors can bring their own offerings such as incense, flowers, and fruit, or make a voluntary donation.

Tips for visiting

  • Dress modestly and appropriately.
  • Keep quiet and orderly within the worship areas.
  • Ask the caretaker before taking photos inside the inner sanctuary.
  • Burn incense and place offerings in the designated spots, and avoid burning votive paper indiscriminately.

Nearby accommodation, dining, and attractions

Since the temple sits in the heart of town, there are plenty of hotels, homestays, and restaurants nearby, such as Hoang An Hotel and Tron Homestay. Don’t miss the chance to try Cao Bang specialties like sour pho, banh cuon canh (steamed rice rolls in broth), seven-spice roast duck, or banh ap chao (deep-fried rice cakes).

From central Cao Bang, you can continue on to the Pac Bo Relic Site (about 50 km away), Ban Gioc Waterfall and Nguom Ngao Cave (about 85–90 km away), or the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark.
