Giới thiệu

Cho Waterfall – a clear, green cascade on the upper reaches of the Bang River

Cho Waterfall is just a few metres high, with water spilling over several rocky ledges into a broad, vivid green pool nestled among the mountains. The gentle cascade is framed by dense vegetation, and the water is so clear you can see the stones below. It’s a favourite spot for Cao Bang locals seeking a cool escape on a hot summer day.

Where is Cho Waterfall?

Cho Waterfall lies on the upper reaches of the Bang River in Ha Quang Commune, Cao Bang Province. Older sources place it in Na Ri Hamlet, Nam Tuan Commune (former Hoa An District), near the border with Ha Quang. Search for “Thac cho” on your map app for accurate directions.

Note: Cao Bang has another Cho Waterfall in Thong Hue, in the east of the province, locally known as Thoong Ma Waterfall. This article is about Cho Waterfall on the upper reaches of the Bang River, north of the city.

One waterfall, three names

Its official name is Cho Waterfall. Young people have given it the more romantic name Tinh Waterfall, while local Tay people call it Thang Gac, meaning “waterfall with a large, wide pool.”

The name Thang Gac reflects the landscape here: a broad, deep pool lies at the foot of the waterfall. Keep this in mind when you visit (see the safety advice below).

A gentle kind of beauty

The waterfall is only a few metres high, but its water tumbles over several tiers into the river, sending up a plume of white spray. Below, the broad green water drifts by peacefully.

The waterfall has three main tiers, with only a short drop between each one. Water spills over the rocks in irregular patterns, creating a natural, unhurried beauty. Cho Waterfall feels peaceful and relaxing rather than grand or powerful.

Dense green trees surround the waterfall, nourished by the flowing water. Visitors often sit on the bank to admire the cascade, take photos and enjoy the cool air.

What to do at Cho Waterfall

Admire the waterfall and unwind: Find a dry rock by the bank, sit back, listen to the water and watch the white spray rise against the green backdrop. This is the safest and best way to enjoy Cho Waterfall.

Take photos: The white water against the rocks and greenery makes a striking backdrop. The soft light in the early morning or late afternoon brings out the colour of the water.

Enjoy a simple picnic: Bring some snacks and spread a blanket by the river for a picnic in nature. Remember to take your rubbish with you.

Safety advice – the most important thing to know

  • Do not bathe or swim at the foot of the waterfall, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain.
  • Keep a close eye on children at all times and don’t let them near the water’s edge.
  • Don’t go alone or visit the waterfall when it’s raining or the water is high.
  • Watch out for slippery rocks covered in moss, and wear shoes with good grip.
  • Ask local residents about the route and any hazards before heading down to the waterfall.

Visit Cho Waterfall to take in the views, listen to the water and relax. Don’t let a beautiful trip end in regret.

Best time to visit

Summer is when the waterfall is at its most beautiful and refreshing, but it’s also the rainy season, so water levels can rise quickly. In autumn (September–November), the weather is drier, the water is clear and the route is easier to travel.

Pair with Nearby Attractions

Cho Waterfall lies north of Cao Bang City, so you can combine your visit with other attractions along the way, such as the Ho Chi Minh Road Km 0 milestone and the Kim Dong Historical Site.

Cho Waterfall may not match the scale of more famous cascades, but it offers a sense of freshness and tranquility that many places have lost. Spend an afternoon by this small waterfall in the upper reaches of the Bang River, listening to the water and mountain breeze, and you may feel your worries ease away. Just remember: admire the waterfall with your eyes, and don’t test it with reckless behavior.
