Giới thiệu

Keo Yen Panorama – Take in the “Bowl-Shaped Valley” of Ha Quang’s Rocky Plateau

From above, Keo Yen unfolds as a long, narrow valley between two limestone cliffs. Its floor is dotted with rice fields, corn plots and small stilt houses tucked against the mountains. Geologists call it a “bag-shaped valley,” one of the distinctive scenic heritage sites in the UNESCO Global Geopark Non Nuoc Cao Bang. Keo Yen Panorama is the perfect place to take in this spectacular landscape.

Where Is Keo Yen Panorama?

The viewpoint overlooks Keo Yen Valley. It was formerly in Keo Yen Commune, in the former Ha Quang District, and is now in Lung Nam Commune. The valley lies about 15 km northeast of the former Ha Quang town center.

Search for “Keo Yen Panorama” on Google Maps to find the viewpoint.

A “Bag-Shaped Valley” Formed Over 300 Million Years

The valley, slopes and mountain peaks around Keo Yen are formed on limestone that developed in warm, shallow seas around 300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous–Permian period. In other words, the mountains you see today were once the floor of an ancient sea.

Keo Yen Valley follows a northwest–southeast fault line. Over a long period of geological change, the valley became markedly lower than the surrounding land, with a huge U- or V-shaped cross-section. The two valley walls are usually 1 to 5 km apart. Its long, enclosed shape, open at one end, led scientists to call it a “bag-shaped valley.”

From above, the formation is easy to see: two towering limestone walls enclose a flat strip of land, like a giant bag set amid the rocky plateau.

A “Stone Culture” in the Valley

What makes Keo Yen special is not just its geology, but also its people. Locals live alongside the stone, facing nature’s harsh conditions with it and finding ways to thrive despite hardship. Traditional stilt houses, stone walls and stone foundations all form part of a distinctive “stone culture.”

This land also bears many traces of Vietnam’s revolution during the struggle for national liberation, from 1941 to 1950.

Keo Yen Through the Seasons

  • Spring: The mountains and forests turn a fresh green, corn is newly planted, and the valley comes alive.
  • Summer: Corn and rice lend the valley floor a lush green, contrasting with the gray limestone.
  • Autumn: Golden sunshine, clear skies and ripe rice make this the best time for panoramic photos.
  • Winter: Early mornings may bring fog and clouds drifting through the valley, creating a dreamlike scene. The Ha Quang rocky plateau is also known for winter cloud hunting.

Best time of day: Visit early in the morning to see mist and clouds, or late in the afternoon when slanting sunlight brings out the mountain cliffs.

Things to Do at Keo Yen Panorama

Take in the whole valley: From the viewpoint, look along the valley to see its giant “bag” shape and the villages below.

Take panoramic photos: This is an ideal spot for wide-angle shots. Try a horizontal composition to capture both mountain walls and the valley floor.

Learn about the geology: Observe the rock layers, faults and karst landscape to understand why UNESCO recognized Cao Bang as a Global Geopark.

Visit the villages below: Stop by the stilt houses to learn about local life and the valley’s “stone culture.”

Combine Your Visit with a Trip Around Lung Nam and Ha Quang

  • Lung Luong Ammonite Fossils: traces of an ancient sea dating back 260 million years, right in the Keo Yen area.
  • Lung Ngan Cloud-Watching Spot and Luc Khu Valley: a rocky plateau surrounded by a sea of clouds in winter.
  • Temple of Great King Nung Tri Cao (Truong Ha Commune): a temple beside a 300-year-old dracontomelon tree.
  • Ban Giang Waterfall: a ribbon-like cascade along the road to Ha Quang.

A day exploring Keo Yen, Lung Luong and Luc Khu offers a complete picture of the Ha Quang rocky plateau, where geology, scenery and culture come together.

Visitor Tips

  • Mountain roads: Drive slowly and carefully, especially in fog. Check your vehicle before setting out.
  • Park safely in a wide spot, and never stop in the middle of the road to take photos.
  • Stay away from cliff edges and dangerous rocky outcrops when taking photos.
  • Bring warm clothing if visiting early in the morning or in winter.
  • Respect local residents and farmland when visiting villages.
  • Do not litter; help preserve this heritage landscape.

Final Thoughts

Keo Yen has no grand structures or bustling tourist facilities. But simply standing at the viewpoint and looking down into the “pocket-shaped valley” between two 300-million-year-old limestone cliffs, you can feel the majesty of nature and the enduring spirit of the people who call this rocky plateau home. As you explore Ha Quang, stop at Keo Yen and discover how Cao Bang is not only beautiful, but also tells stories spanning hundreds of millions of years.
