Giới thiệu

Cao Bang Heaven’s Gate – a spiritual site in the Phia Day Range on the frontier of Tra Linh

When people hear “heaven’s gate,” they often think of lofty mountain passes such as Ma Pi Leng or O Quy Ho. But Cao Bang has a very different kind of heaven’s gate: it is not especially high or perched atop a dramatic pass, but set in a rocky saddle in the Phia Day Range, where local people believe heaven and earth meet. This is Tra Linh Heaven’s Gate, a unique spiritual destination on the border frontier.

Where is Heaven’s Gate?

Heaven’s Gate sits on the Soc Do mountain saddle in the Phia Day Range, in Gioc Dau Village. It was formerly part of Hung Quoc Town in the former Tra Linh District and is now in Tra Linh Commune. The new Tra Linh Commune was formed in July 2025 from Tra Linh Town and the communes of Quoc Toan and Cao Chuong.

Getting there: From Cao Bang City, head east toward the summit of Ma Phuc Pass. At the junction, one road leads to Trung Khanh and the other to Tra Linh. Take the road to Tra Linh, continue to the center, then head northwest toward the foot of Phia Day Mountain, which is nearby. A distinctive narrow path leads to a flat clearing beneath a rock face about 50 meters high. This is Heaven’s Gate.

A low-lying yet sacred “heaven’s gate”

Heaven’s Gate Mountain rises to nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, much lower than the famous heaven’s gates in the northern mountains. What sets this place apart is not its elevation, but its spiritual significance.

According to local tradition, this is where heaven and earth meet and yin and yang come together. The surrounding mountain formations are believed to gather energy in this area. People come here to pray for peace and prosperity in the country, and for a peaceful, prosperous life.

Heaven’s Gate became widely known in 2007. Since then, locals and visitors have come here to burn incense and pray.

A provincial-level scenic site

On September 18, 2009, the Cao Bang Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 2161/QD-UBND, recognizing Gioc Dau Cave and Tra Linh Heaven’s Gate as provincial-level scenic sites. Under the proposed plan, Heaven’s Gate, Gioc Dau Cave and Thang Hen Lake will be linked as a scenic and spiritual tourism area.

Together with Truc Lam Phat Tich Pagoda and Truc Lam Ta Lung Pagoda, Heaven’s Gate is considered one of the nation’s spiritual landmarks on the border frontier.

What makes Heaven’s Gate special

Heaven’s Gate is a rocky mountain saddle with a flat clearing at its base and a large, upright rock above. Small statues here are worshipped by local people.

Locals and visitors also share stories about the natural rock formations around Heaven’s Gate: a winding strip of rock that reminds many of the S shape of Vietnam on a map, and rocks resembling tiger or lion heads. Whether these shapes are a coincidence of nature or a product of the imagination, the stories add to Heaven’s Gate’s mystique.

Things to do at Heaven’s Gate

Offer incense and pray: Most people come to Heaven’s Gate to offer incense and pray for peace, good health for their families, and good fortune in life.

Learn about local beliefs: Listen to local people talk about Heaven’s Gate and the traditional belief that heaven and earth meet here.

Enjoy the mountain scenery: From Heaven’s Gate, take in the sweeping mountain views around Tra Linh.

Look for natural rock shapes: Take a closer look at the unusual rock formations and see if you can spot the shapes people talk about.

Important note

According to visitor reviews, Heaven’s Gate is a small hill with worship statues and is a spiritual site for local people, rather than a conventional sightseeing attraction. Therefore:

  • Dress respectfully and modestly, and maintain a solemn demeanor.
  • Keep your voice down and avoid horseplay. Do not climb on worship statues or sacred rock formations.
  • Ask local residents for permission before photographing places of worship.
  • Do not litter or burn votive paper offerings carelessly; light incense only in designated areas.
  • Wear suitable shoes: the path follows a mountain pass and may be slippery in the rain.
  • During festivals and at the start of the year, the site can be quite crowded.

Best Time to Visit

  • At the start of the year, during Tet, and on full moon and new moon days: locals often visit Heaven’s Gate to light incense and pray for good fortune.
  • Autumn and spring: the weather is mild and dry, making it ideal for getting around and enjoying the scenery.

Try to avoid days with heavy rain, as the mountain pass can become slippery.

Pair Your Visit with Tra Linh

Heaven’s Gate is part of Tra Linh’s scenic and spiritual landscape, making it easy to combine with visits to:

  • Gioc Dau Cave: a cave also recognized as a provincial-level scenic site, alongside Heaven’s Gate.
  • Thang Hen Lake: a group of 36 interconnected mountain lakes and a nationally recognized scenic site.
  • Ma Phuc Pass: a seven-tiered pass on National Highway 3 and a geological heritage site in the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark.
  • Ham Huong and Thanh Binh Caves: two caves near Thang Hen Lake.

Final Thoughts

Tra Linh Heaven’s Gate has none of the dizzying heights or winding mountain roads found at other “heaven’s gates.” Its quiet, sacred atmosphere, set in a mountain saddle amid the Phia Day Range, is what makes it a special destination on the remote borderlands. Take a moment to slow down, light a stick of incense, and offer a prayer for peace. Perhaps the true “heaven’s gate” lies not in the altitude, but in the sense of calm each visitor finds among the mountains and forests.
