Giới thiệu

Thoong Cot Panorama – Admire the Quay Son River Winding Through Golden Rice Fields

From above, the jade-green Quay Son River winds gracefully between golden rice fields, with limestone mountains rising on either side. This is Thoong Cot (also spelled Thoong Got in some places), one of Cao Bang’s most beautiful autumn landscapes. Photographers return each harvest season to capture a shot to remember.

Where Is Thoong Cot?

Thoong Cot is in Dam Thuy Commune (former Trung Khanh District), along the Quay Son River. The valley is where the river flows past local rice fields before continuing downstream.

In the Tay and Nung languages, “thoong” means waterfall or stretch of rapids. The name Thoong Cot is therefore closely tied to the Quay Son River flowing through this area.

The Quay Son River – The Soul of the Valley

The Quay Son River rises in Guangxi Province, China, and enters Vietnam near the Po Peo border crossing. About 49 km of the river runs through Vietnam. Except after prolonged heavy rain, its waters stay jade green year-round.

Rice fields here don’t form terraces on the mountainsides like those in Hoang Su Phi or Sa Pa. Instead, they stretch across the valley, nestled among limestone mountains and following the banks of the Quay Son River. This combination of green water, golden rice, and limestone peaks gives Thoong Cot its distinctive beauty.

What Can You See from Thoong Cot Panorama?

From the elevated viewpoint, you can take in the valley’s full landscape:

  • The winding Quay Son River, like a jade-green ribbon crossing the fields.
  • Rice fields following the river’s curves, lush green in one season and brilliant gold in another.
  • Rugged limestone mountains all around, adding depth to the view.
  • Riverside villages, with homes tucked beneath the mountains.

In autumn, golden rice fields curve around the Quay Son River, framed by limestone ranges, creating a scene that looks like a painting. The view of the green river standing out against the golden fields is a favorite with photographers visiting Cao Bang in autumn.

Best Time to Visit

Rice harvest (around September 15–October 5): This is the golden season at Thoong Cot. The whole valley turns gold, with the green river standing out amid the rice fields. Harvest season here is brief, so keep an eye on local updates to plan your visit.

Green rice season (July–August): The rice is still young, and the fields are lush and beautiful.

Best time of day: Photographers recommend early morning or late afternoon for photos at Thoong Cot, when the light is soft and the rice and water look their best.

Photography Tips

  • Wide views: Shoot wide to capture the river’s full curve through the fields.
  • Early morning: You may find a light mist over the river, creating an ethereal scene.
  • Late afternoon: Angled sunlight makes the golden rice glow and casts shadows across the mountains.
  • Drone shots: From above, the river looks like a green dragon winding through the fields. Check flight regulations, as the area is near the border.
  • What to wear: White or red clothes, or traditional attire, stand out against the golden rice.

Add These Stops to Your Itinerary

Thoong Cot lies along one of the most scenic rice harvest routes in Trung Khanh, making it easy to combine with:

  • Phong Nam Valley: The roughly 10 km road connecting central Trung Khanh with Phong Nam is lined with golden rice fields, green rivers, and limestone peaks.
  • The Lone Rock (Cao Thang 3 Hamlet, Doai Duong Commune): A limestone boulder standing alone amid the rice fields.
  • Ban Viet Lake: A lake among the mountains, with red-leaved sweetgum forests in winter.
  • Nguom Ngao Cave: A famous cave, also in Dam Thuy Commune.

Visitor Tips

  • Stay off the rice fields when looking for a photo spot. Stick to the field paths and established trails, as these fields are a vital source of income for local residents.
  • Park safely and never stop in the middle of the road to take photos.
  • Take care at high viewpoints and keep away from cliff edges.
  • Don’t swim in the river unless you know how deep it is and how strong the current is, especially during the rainy season.
  • Take your rubbish with you to help keep the valley clean and beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Thoong Cot has no major attractions or special services. There is only the river, rice fields and limestone mountains, but when all three come together beneath the autumn sun, you’ll understand why people are willing to travel hundreds of kilometres just to take it in for a few minutes. If you visit Trung Khanh during rice harvest season, don’t miss this moment.
