Phieng Muong Grass Hill – A Green Highland Meadow in the Mountains of Bao Lam
After winding along the mountain passes of western Cao Bang, a lush green highland meadow suddenly comes into view. Rolling grassy hills stretch to the horizon, white clouds drift at eye level, and the Gam River winds through the distance. This is Phieng Muong Grass Hill, known among travelers as Bao Lam’s “highland meadow.” Still wonderfully untouched, it’s a place visitors are eager to return to.
Where Is Phieng Muong Grass Hill?
According to Cao Bang Newspaper and local tourism sources, Phieng Muong Grass Hill is in Quang Lam Commune (the former Bao Lam District). Since July 2025, Quang Lam and Thach Lam communes have merged to form the new Quang Lam Commune.
The hill is about 160 km west of Cao Bang City and around 10 km from the center of Pac Mieu (now part of Bao Lam Commune). From Pac Mieu, continue onward, then follow the trail up to the hilltop. The trail is quite difficult, so make sure you have a suitable vehicle and are in good physical condition.
A Highland Meadow in the Mountains
Set at a high elevation, the grassland spans dozens of hectares. Layer upon layer of rolling hills unfold before you, covered in lush grass that ripples softly in the wind.
From the hilltop, take in sweeping views of rugged mountains, deep valleys and the Gam River winding picturesquely below. Many compare Phieng Muong to Cao Bang’s own “Dong Cao,” though it is wilder, more open and marked by more layers of rolling hills.
A Different Beauty in Every Season
- October – the best time of year: Locals say the grass grows tallest at this time. The entire hillside becomes a vast, soft landscape that ripples whenever the wind blows.
- October – December: The grass is lush green and full of life.
- January – March: The grass turns golden brown, giving the landscape a quieter, more romantic feel.
Things to Do at Phieng Muong
Go Cloud Hunting at Sunrise
Early morning is the best time to visit Phieng Muong. Set out then for a memorable cloud-hunting experience, with clouds drifting right before your eyes. As they gradually clear, a dramatic panorama of mountains and the winding river emerges like a painting.
Watch the Sunset
As the sun sets, the grassland glows a warm golden orange, creating a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. It’s the perfect moment to sit quietly on the hilltop.
Camp and Enjoy a Picnic
Phieng Muong is ideal for an overnight camping trip, a barbecue and stargazing. The area is extremely remote, however, with no shops or food stalls. Bring your tent, supplies and food with you.
Take Photos
Rolling green slopes, wide-open skies and white clouds make a stunning backdrop for memorable photos. In October especially, tall grass swaying in the wind creates a wonderfully cinematic scene.
Add More Stops to Your Bao Lam Itinerary
- Thach Lam Waterfall (Pac Rang Waterfall): A 120-meter cascade about 5 km from the grass hill.
- Bao Lam 3 Hydropower Reservoir: A reservoir stretching more than 10 km through the rocky mountains.
- Bao Lam Bullfighting Festival: The province’s largest bullfighting festival, if your visit coincides with it.
Suggested 2-day, 1-night itinerary: On day one, travel from Cao Bang City to Bao Lam, have lunch in Pac Mieu, then head to Phieng Muong Grass Hill in the afternoon. Camp there or return to town for the night. On day two, get up early to go cloud hunting, then stop by Thach Lam Waterfall before heading back.
Important Notes
- Rugged terrain: Travel in a large group or ask a local guide to lead the way, especially if you plan to stay overnight.
- No services available: Bring plenty of water and food, along with a flashlight, warm clothing, and a portable charger.
- Mountain weather changes quickly: Nights and early mornings can be cold and misty. Avoid heading up the hill in the rain, as the trails become slippery.
- Campfire safety: Only light fires in open areas, and make sure they are completely extinguished before you leave, especially during the dry grass season.
- Help protect the grassland: Take all your rubbish with you and leave no trace of your campsite.
Final thoughts
Phieng Muong has no resorts or cafes—just grass, clouds, wind, and the Gam River in the distance. Yet this unspoilt landscape is its greatest gift. Spend a morning on the hilltop, watching the clouds lift to reveal the green grassland below, and you’ll understand why visitors to Phieng Muong never forget this place.
