Lonely Rock – A Quiet Landmark Amid Doai Duong’s Golden Rice Fields

In the valley of Cao Thang 3 Hamlet, where terraced fields in shades of green and gold stretch to the foot of the mountains, a limestone rock stands alone. There are no trees or houses around it, just rice fields and the wind. Locals have given it an affectionate, slightly wistful name: Lonely Rock. When the rice ripens, the gray rock rising from a sea of golden fields creates a picture-perfect scene that makes passersby stop and admire the view.

Where Is Lonely Rock?

The rock stands in the middle of the fields of Cao Thang 3 Hamlet, Doai Duong Commune. In July 2025, the new Doai Duong Commune was formed from the former communes of Trung Phuc, Cao Thang, and Doai Duong in the former Trung Khanh District.

One interesting detail is that the road through these fields continues to Ban Viet Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall. You can stop at Lonely Rock along your journey through eastern Cao Bang without taking a detour.

A Rock in the Valley

Lonely Rock is a freestanding limestone formation in the middle of a flat rice field. Its rough, layered surface is gray, with darker patches shaped by years of wind and rain. Behind it, forested hills rise in deep green; a small road and a few local homes run along their base.

Cao Bang is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Non Nuoc Cao Bang, where limestone mountains form striking and unusual shapes. Few places, however, have a single rock standing quite so alone among rice fields—as if it were a silent “sentinel” watching over the valley. Perhaps that is why locals gave it such an evocative name: Lonely Rock.

A Different View in Every Season

Rice harvest season (around September–October): This is the most beautiful time to visit. Golden hues spread across the valley, mixed with patches of green to create a landscape rich in color. The gray rock stands out against the sea of rice, making for a breathtaking sight.

Green rice season (around June–August): The fields are lush and fresh, and the rock looks like an island in a vast green sea.

Flooded-field season (early in the growing season): Water-filled fields reflect the sky and the rock, creating strikingly unusual photo opportunities.

Winter: After the harvest, the fields turn earthy brown and the landscape grows quiet—a lovely time to appreciate its rustic beauty.

Things to Do at Lonely Rock

Take Photos from Above

The most impressive viewpoint is from the elevated road or a hillside overlooking the fields. From here, you can see the rock framed by winding rice paddies, with layers of mountains in the distance.

Walk Along the Rice Field Banks

Walk along the field banks, breathe in the scent of rice and the fresh countryside air, and admire the rock up close. At harvest time, the fragrance of ripe rice fills the valley.

Watch the Sunset

In the late afternoon, slanting sunlight falls across the fields and rock, casting long shadows over the rice paddies. It is the most romantic moment of the day.

Photography tips:

  • Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for soft light and beautiful rice-field colors.
  • Use a wide-angle shot to capture the small rock against the vast valley, conveying its sense of solitude.
  • Wear red or white, or traditional clothing, to stand out against the golden rice fields.
  • If you have a drone, an aerial view clearly reveals the pattern of fields surrounding the rock.

Combine It with Nearby Stops

Lonely Rock lies along a scenic route through eastern Cao Bang, making it easy to combine with:

  • Ban Viet Lake: A roughly 5-hectare lake nestled among forested mountains, popular for camping and trekking. From December through late January, the sweetgum trees by the lake turn beautiful shades of yellow and red.
  • Long Vuong Shrine (Thong Hue Street): An old shrine beside the Bac Vong River, associated with a lantern festival held in leap years.
  • Thoong Ma Waterfall (Thong Hue Dog Waterfall): A multi-tiered waterfall on the Bac Vong River.
  • Duc Thanh Pho Temple (Trung Khanh center): A temple dedicated to Hung Hien Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Uat.
