Giới thiệu

Lung Ngan Cloud-Hunting Spot – Watch the Sunrise Above a Sea of Clouds in Ha Quang

At five in the morning, it is still dark and bitterly cold. You stand at the high point of Lung Ngan, waiting. Then, as the first light appears, the valley below emerges beneath a blanket of billowing white clouds. Only the rocky mountain peaks rise above them, like islands in an ocean. It is a sight that cloud-hunting enthusiasts are willing to wake early and travel far to see.

Where Is Lung Ngan?

Lung Ngan Cloud-Hunting Spot is in Ha Quang Commune, Cao Bang Province. Ha Quang Commune was established in July 2025 through the merger of Hong Sy, Ngoc Dao and Ma Ba communes in the former Ha Quang District. Search for “Lung Ngan Cloud-Hunting Spot” on your map for directions.

Ha Quang is a landscape of limestone mountains in northern Cao Bang. The Luc Khu area of Ha Quang is often called Cao Bang’s “rocky plateau,” where rugged mountain ranges are closely tied to local life. On winter mornings, a sea of clouds surrounds the peaks and hides the villages in the valleys below. Lung Ngan captures this distinctive beauty of the Ha Quang highlands.

The Beauty of Lung Ngan

In the Tay and Nung languages, “lung” means valley. True to its name, Lung Ngan is a place to look out over a valley ringed by rocky mountains. When clouds gather, the valley appears to be filled with a soft white blanket. On clear days, you can see fields, villages and layer upon layer of mountains.

Visitors who have been here praise its beauty and recommend a visit. Some say September is a particularly lovely time to see Lung Ngan.

When Is the Best Time to Go Cloud Hunting?

According to Cao Bang’s cloud-hunting enthusiasts, the best time is from November through the end of March. Clouds can appear at other times of year too, especially during seasonal transitions.

Cloud hunting depends largely on luck. Ideal conditions often follow days of light drizzle, with low nighttime temperatures and warmer days. If you are lucky, the clouds may linger from early morning until the sun is high. More often, though, the best views last just 20–30 minutes before the clouds quickly disperse.

Some days, clouds stretch across the valley; at other times, they form only a few wisps or roll in like ocean waves. Every cloud-hunting trip brings a surprise.

Tips for Cloud Hunting at Lung Ngan

  • Get up early: Arrive before sunrise so you don’t miss the best views.
  • Check the weather: Look for days after light rain, with cold nights and sunny skies during the day.
  • Be patient: You may have to wait, and clouds are never guaranteed. Treat that uncertainty as part of the journey.
  • Bring a camera and a fully charged phone: The clouds can disappear quickly, so be ready.
  • Try different photo angles: Capture the cloud-filled valley, a person silhouetted against the sea of clouds or the sun breaking through the cloud cover.

Add More Stops to Your Ha Quang Itinerary

From Lung Ngan, you can continue exploring northern Cao Bang:

  • Km 0 Milestone on the Ho Chi Minh Road and the Kim Dong Historical Site in Truong Ha Commune.
  • Temple of Great King Nung Tri Cao in Truong Ha, home to a centuries-old star fruit tree estimated to be around 300 years old.
  • Cho Waterfall on the upper reaches of the Bang River.

Safety Tips

  • Bring warm clothes, gloves and a wool hat: Early mornings in the highlands can be very cold, especially in winter.
  • Take care on mountain roads in the dark: Turn on your lights, drive slowly and watch for fog that can reduce visibility.
  • Travel in a group and avoid going alone in the early morning.
  • Bring a flashlight, drinking water and snacks.
  • Keep away from cliff edges when taking photos.
  • Protect the landscape: Take your rubbish with you and leave no trace.

Final Thoughts

Cloud hunting is not always successful. But the wait in the cold, followed by the sudden sight of an entire valley blanketed in white clouds, is what stays with you. Lung Ngan is still little known and uncrowded—which is why you should visit now, while it remains a hidden gem in the highlands of Ha Quang.
