Giới thiệu

Ban Sam Waterfall – The “Summer Princess” with Seven White Tiers Set Amid the Mountains of Phuc Hoa

Hidden behind Khau Chia Mountain, the Sam Xuyen Stream winds quietly through the green forest before suddenly tumbling over seven successive rocky ledges, sending up white spray like ribbons of silk. The gentle rush of water fills the fresh air, and clear blue pools invite visitors to take a dip. This is Ban Sam Waterfall, a seven-tier cascade known as the “sleeping princess in the forest” of Cao Bang’s remote borderlands.

Where Is Ban Sam Waterfall?

The waterfall is in Ban Sam Hamlet. It was formerly part of Luong Thien Commune, then Hoa Thuan Town (the former Quang Hoa District), and is now in Phuc Hoa Commune following the 2025 administrative reorganization.

The waterfall is about 56 km from Cao Bang City and 3 km from National Highway 3, tucked behind Khau Chia Mountain. The road to the waterfall has been paved with concrete, making the journey convenient despite the distance from the city.

Getting there: From Cao Bang City, take National Highway 3 toward Phuc Hoa. At Ban Sam, turn onto the concrete road and continue for about 3 km to the waterfall. Search for “Ban Sam Waterfall” on Google Maps for directions.

A Cascade Along Sam Xuyen Stream

Ban Sam Waterfall lies along Sam Xuyen Stream, a small tributary that flows into the Bang River. Blessed with several clear, beautiful cascades, Ban Sam Hamlet has a wild yet romantic charm, and Ban Sam Waterfall is considered the “soul” of the area.

The waterfall is within the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark. Though well known locally, it has retained its unspoiled character.

Seven Tiers Like Ribbons of Silk

Ban Sam Waterfall is also called Seven-Tier Waterfall because the stream divides into seven cascades as it descends. White water tumbles over each rocky ledge, its lively, lilting sounds echoing through the landscape.

The waterfall is not especially tall, but it is quite wide, giving it an impressive presence whether you are admiring it or taking photos. Its seven tiers flow one after another like watery steps, each with its own character, creating a scene that is both majestic and romantic.

One of Ban Sam Waterfall’s distinctive features is the broad channel of water below each tier. Visitors can cool off in the refreshing water or sit and watch it flow gently down to the levels below.

Natural Swimming Spots All Year Round

Several small swimming spots near the waterfall have shallow, clear water that flows year-round. This is one of Ban Sam’s biggest draws, making it a great place for families and groups of friends to enjoy time in the water.

In summer, local residents often come here to swim, relax and picnic. The fresh, cool air and refreshing water help beat the heat and wash away the day’s fatigue.

What to Do at Ban Sam Waterfall

Take in all seven tiers: Follow the stream to see each cascade; every viewpoint offers a different scene.

Relax in the pools: Find a shallow channel below the cascades, sit with your feet in the water or take a dip, and enjoy the cool flow.

Swim and play in the stream: The small, shallow swimming spots are ideal for children and families.

Enjoy a picnic: Bring some food, spread a mat beside the stream and spend a relaxing day in nature.

Take photos: The wide waterfall, white water and green forest make a stunning backdrop. For softer light and better photos, visit in the morning or late afternoon.

Savor mountain cuisine: While in Ban Sam, be sure to try local specialties from the Phuc Hoa area.

Best Time to Visit

Summer (around May to August): This is the best time to visit. The waterfall is at its fullest and brightest, making it ideal for swimming and outdoor fun. It is also why the falls are known as the “Summer Princess.”

Autumn: The water remains clear, the weather is cool, and there is little rain, making it a great time for a picnic.

Avoid visiting on days with heavy rain, as stream levels can rise quickly and the rocks become slippery.

Combine It with a Phuc Hoa Itinerary

Ban Sam Waterfall is located along National Highway 3, making it easy to combine with other destinations in the Phuc Hoa area:

  • Truc Lam Ta Lung Pagoda: regarded as a spiritual landmark on the border.
  • Ta Lung Border Gate: Cao Bang’s busy international border crossing.
  • Tran Duy Tran Temple (Nguom Phuc, Cach Linh): a provincial-level cultural and historical site.
  • More than 1,000-year-old ironwood tree in Canh Linh: a Vietnam Heritage Tree.

On the way from Cao Bang City, you can also stop by the Luong Luong Heritage Bombax Tree (Hanh Phuc Commune) and Phia Thap incense village (Quang Uyen Commune).

Safety Tips

  • Swim only in shallow areas; do not venture into deep water where the terrain is unknown.
  • Do not climb the higher tiers of the waterfall; the moss-covered rocks are very slippery.
  • Keep a close eye on children at all times near the water.
  • Do not swim during heavy rain or when the water is muddy or flowing fast.
  • Wear shoes or sandals with good grip when walking on the rocks.
  • Take your rubbish with you and help keep Sam Xuyen Stream clear and clean.
  • Respect local residents and the fields and gardens around the waterfall.

Final Thoughts

Ban Sam Waterfall may not be grand in scale, but it has a rare, pristine and peaceful beauty. Its seven white tiers cascade like ribbons, while refreshing pools and the fresh mountain air make it an ideal summer getaway. If you pass through Phuc Hoa, set aside an afternoon for Ban Sam. You’ll understand why people call this waterfall the “princess of summer.”
